Back-to-School: Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth and Their Families
The start of a new school year can bring excitement, anticipation, and a fresh sense of possibility. For LGBTQ+ youth and their families, however, returning to school can also bring unique questions and stressors.
Will my child feel safe being themselves at school? Will teachers use the right name and pronouns? How will classmates respond? What happens if my child is questioning their identity or isn't ready to share it with everyone?
These concerns are especially important because school is such a significant part of a young person's social and emotional world.
Start With Connection, Not Pressure
One of the most meaningful things parents and caregivers can do is create space for open, judgment-free conversations. Rather than assuming what your child needs, try asking questions such as:
"How are you feeling about going back to school?"
"Is there anything you're worried about?"
"Who at school makes you feel safe or supported?"
"Is there anything you want me to know about how you'd like to be supported?"
For some youth, talking openly about identity feels comfortable. For others, it may take time. A young person does not need to have everything figured out before they deserve support.
Work Together on a Support Plan
If your child is LGBTQ+, gender-expansive, or questioning their identity, consider talking together about what support might look like at school. This could include identifying trusted adults, discussing how they want their name or pronouns handled, identifying supportive peers, or making a plan for what they can do if they experience bullying or discrimination.
Most importantly, let your child have a voice in these decisions whenever possible. Support should increase their sense of safety and autonomy—not make them feel like their identity is something adults need to solve.
Families Don't Have to Have All the Answers
Parents sometimes worry that they need to completely understand LGBTQ+ identities before they can support their child. You don't. Being willing to listen, learn, and stay connected can be far more important than having the perfect words.
At Resonance Columbus, we believe LGBTQ+ youth and their families deserve a space where questions, uncertainty, identity exploration, and growth can all be met with compassion and respect. As the school year begins, remember that your child's sense of belonging starts at home—and knowing they have someone in their corner can make a meaningful difference.
